My Ancient Armies

Gentlemen,

I'm not sure if I'll take an active part in the "Kingdoms of Antiquity" group blog or not . . . but I'm starting to think about it.

Off of the top of my head, my currently painted 25mm Ancient armies are:

  • Greek Hoplites
  • Alexandrian Imperial
  • Syracusan
  • Carthaginian
  • Feudal Scots
  • Feudal Spanish
  • Samurai

I know that I have unpainted lead for these 25mm armies:
  • Ancient Indian
  • Illyrian
  • Gauls
  • Early Imperial Romans
  • Ayyubid Egyptian
  • Knights (3/4 painted)

In 15mm I have the following painted armies:
  • New Babylonians
  • Greek Hoplites (early & late)
  • Late Imperial Romans
  • Franks/Goths
  • Arab Conquest
  • Medieval German Knights

All of the above are full armies (at least 200 figures -- often far more). Generally they are based ala WRG (I played 7th Edition for far too long), although the Feudal Scots and Alexandrian Imperial armies are based for WAB.

I also have several smaller DBA-size armies . . . and I'm probably forgetting several since I really haven't played much in the way of Ancients for twenty years or so.

If I do participate in the Kingdoms of Antiquity, what would I want to play?

Suggestions welcome.

Jeff -it would be great to have you on board! Please do join in...
I am an ancients player of over 30 years standing and have had some great games in the period. I have been thru 6th edition, never played 7th, dba , dbm and am looking into wab to do a 15th century project!

Jeff
Hopilites would be an interesting army to field and give us a Greek dimension to things.

Jeff - Like yourself, I go back aways (WRG 3rd Ed in my case), but I sold all my armies when I quit. When I decided to get back into Ancients I picked out my two favorite armies of all time, Ghaznavids (this will be my 4th one) in 15mm, and a generic Dark Ages Horde (my 3rd) in 25mm that will work as Vikings, Anglo-Danes, Orkney Vikings, Dublin Vikings, etc., done with all Old School figures (Partha, Minifig, Early Citadel, Garrison, Frontier, Hinchcliffe, and even some Prince August homecasts).

Point being, if I had the variety of armies that you have, I would probably try to pick the one, or even two (one 15mm and one 25mm) that I had the fondest memories of or enjoyed the most, win or lose, and go that direction. These days its all about the quality playing time and the fun associated with the blogging, not the winning or the losing or my tourney ranking. All of them will work as something in the Hyborean World, so pick the ones that you enjoy spending time with. The others can always be used as something else for proxy battles ;-)

Some of the Hyborian kingdoms seem to have vaguely Greek guards and the rest are Medievalish...
